NZFC+ NZ film Industry
1. Who are the NZFC and what is their primary purpose?
The NZFC is an organisation in NZ that focuses on supporting and promoting NZ's film industry. They do this by investing into New Zealand featured films and short films. They aim to contribute production financing to between 8-12 films each year. We develop scripts and the careers of New Zealand filmmakers.
2. What films have they funded in the last 5 years that did really well internationally?
Some of the films that have done really well include Red, white & brass ( 2023); Cousins ( 2021) ; Juniper (2021) ; The power of the Dog ( 2021) ; The justice of Bunny King ( 2021)
3. What films have they funded in the last 5 years that you have seen or that you know have been popular?
Two films that I have personally herd of and know has doe really well is the movie 'Cousins', and 'Boy'. I haven't heard of many others, but the movies listed above are the top films from the NZFC , and most of them can be found on Netflix.
4. What services do the NZFC offer to help NZ filmmakers in the production process?
- We are a government agency that invests in New Zealand feature films and short films.
- We aim to contribute production financing to between ten and 12 feature films each year.
- We help talented practitioners develop their careers.
- We promote New Zealand films domestically and internationally.
- We market New Zealand's screen production industry overseas and attract international productions to New Zealand.
- We administer the New Zealand Screen Production Rebate and other grants and approve official co-productions
5. What is the difference between the 'why' NZFC funds films vs. 'why' Hollywood Big 5 studios fund films?
NZFC aims to help develop actors and their skills, and to enhance the film industry in NZ. This helps develop careers, as well as promotes films from NZ domestically and internationally. However, the big 5 film companies aim to make money. They want to maximize their profits and also increase their share in the market. Due to the actors already being well know, exposure isn't something that they will focus on, but rather trying to get top actors in their film to draw more people in to watch the films.
