Opening Sequence P.T 2
Marvel Studios Black Widows:
- The opening sequence of the movie black widow is very engaging and captivates the audiences focus and attention from the start. The opening sequence consists of desolation and melancholic music in which gives us as the audience the feeling of the movie which is going to be sad and melancholic. We get a sense of a tragic event that has taken place as this occurred in the past, giving us context. It has displays countless amount of young girls being taken somewhere against their will, as the audience can hear the girls screaming and crying as they are taken away from their sisters and the only lives they ever knew. Audience also sees their personal belongings such as toys and stuffed animals ( their comfort toys) being thrown on the floor and laying deserted on the dirty and muddy road. In combination this is effective as it not necessarily foreshadows what is to come in the film, but gives the audience context and the backstory of what the movie is based upon and explains briefly what happened to all those young girls. As mentioned before this strikes interest from the audience as we are inquisitive as to what has happened to these girls much later on in the future, as well as how this unfolds in the plot of the movie. In terms of editing, it is rather faster paced as is switches from different memories and the different things that happened to the girls. There is also a glitch effect that is between shots, and the filter/effect that is placed over the pieces of the footage clearly tells the audience that they are past memories and old pieces of footage. The ending of the opening sequence ends in a distorted and off timed music that's transmits alarmed and discomforting atmosphere.
- This is the opening sequence to the action thriller movie Jack Reacher, in which it focuses on displaying the establishing shot and displaying the location where the movies is going to take place in. In terms of visuals, it isn't all that interesting as it just displays the roads, motorways , bridges and buildings on the town/city that they are in. However, with this being said us as the audience doesn't expect anything else apart from these shots, making it surprising and interesting when shots of a mysterious figure or object is being shown, It is however subtle in some ways ( e.g the behind shot of a dark figure driving a car; close up of his gloves; gun power being pour ect). This then encourages and stimulates intrigue as the audience needs to pay attention in order to pick up on all the small clues. This sets the scene and also gives the audience subtle clues, that this unknown person may be an assassin in some way and is going to kill someone. The music also eludes to the fact that the there is going to be a villain and a hero in the movie, as the music is rather dramatic and cinematic in some ways, meaning there is going to be upcoming action. The shots are rather smooth and the text seamlessly fades in and out between the shots. All these factors make this opening sequence interesting and engaging to some degree, but differs form other thriller opening sequences especially action thrillers, where the music is more intense and the shots and editing is more fast paced.
- The opening sequence to the movie 'Drive' is a bit different from other opening sequences for thriller movies as the opening sequences are usually very suspenseful as they try to portray the atmosphere of the rest of the film. However this opening sequence is rather mellow and doesn't have an exiting and anxious fell about it, but rather a calmer and cruisy vibe as he just drives about in the streets. It is set at night as well, which gives a more relaxed/sleepy feel in this opening which differs from the eerie and scary feelings that other sequences give off when set at night time. with this being said, it is also paired with rather slow cut editing instead of fast cut editing . This adds to the slow and laid back atmosphere that is evidently being given off. Yet again, relaxed feeling can be seen as the calm before the storm, as at the end of the sequence we see him entering a motel room and leaving a mysterious bag on the bed and abandoning it. That makes us question what is in the bag, who is it for, why did he leave it there ect. This deposits intrigue and a series of questions in the audiences mind, capturing and engaging our full attention. The music starts of rather distorted and muffled and then slowly turns back to normal. It adds to the chilled and loosened atmosphere which takes that edge and seriousness away. As mentioned before the conventions used in this opening sequence differs from the other thriller opening sequences, but is still effective as it captures the audiences attention in a different way.
