Film Distribution

Self made films have various distribution methods to get there films some attention and exposure. Some of these methods include:

  1.  Bidding War at a film festival
This can be helpful for small and independent film makers as film festivals as they will gain and attract potential buyers and interest. Bidding war can take place at the end of the festival and films could go on auction and could offer a full buy out of the film. However this is rather uncommon and rare as the film would have to be at the best quality and one of a kind. They also being used less and less, as it is something of the past. They are quite hard to achieve and are quite uncommon not making it a suitable option of distribution for our film.

An example of this was the film called " A Thousand and One" that was played at the most recent Sundance film festival. The film company called Focus Features have distributed it, and the movie is about to enter
the movie America on the 31st of March.

        2.  Selling Movies to a streaming platform

Any indie film maker would love and dream to sell their movies to top distributors like Netflix, Lionsgate, universal, paramount, warner ect. In order for this to have a good chance at happening, indi film makers will have to do tons of research and knowing in detail the films target audience. When they choose to pitch to film distributors, they will need to provide a direct and strategic path to make them feel safe and secure in their investment. Having previous exposure and well as good connections are also key.

An example of this is the amazing and wonderful movie, especially among the Christian community is the " Passions of Christ". This is the most highest grossing indi movie made. They were distributed via Icon productions but the movie is now available to watch on apple tv, YouTube movies, and google play movies.

    3. Social Media Promotion and Marketing strategies

With the strong growth of social media and the power it holds, independent films have a great chance to gain exposure as millions and millions use social media every single day. Partnering with influencers to potentially show snippets or just to even shed light on the film will slowly gain more interest, making it easier to enter bigger opportunities like the cinemas and streaming websites. Streaming and even making a guest appearance on podcast or radio stations are also very influential, and if planned and executed careful, will be very beneficial in exposing the film, ( eg the film is about teens, and then therefore going on a radio station that lots of teen and young adults listen to). I think this could be an excellent choice of distribution for our film to gain exposure and attract viewers, which could lead to bigger opportunities as the film has already had interest shown in it. It also is a rather cheap option and has very effective results.

A perfect example of this is the Dhar Mann videos. Despite the films being distributed by their own studio ' Dhar Mann Studios' , they only started getting views and slowly becoming successful as snippets of their films were shown on tik tok, causing people wanting to watch them. Through this exposure, they became successful as more and more people started watching the small films.
